I haven't heard of anything like that before, though I've never used the Debian
packages either.

The only things I can think of that would slow down ScummVM are fancy graphics
filters and fancy sound emulation. When it comes to graphics, even my 450 MHz
PII can handle hq3x in most cases for 320x200 games, so we can probably
discount that.

As for fancy sound emulation, Adlib shouldn't be a problem. Fluidsynth might be,
and I'm told the MT-32 emulator needs more hardware (not to mention data files)
than I have.

I assume you did check that it was ScummVM and not some other process that was
sucking up the precious CPU cycles?
