Yes, the sole reason was to 'beautify' the code of the SCUMM engine, as
you put it. I thought a one time breakage of save game compatibility
might be worth it, in order to clean up and improve code in that way.

No, I currently don't know of any code changes to the SCUMM game engine,
that would actually require these changes to be made.
