Hi Filippos, thank you :)

The new stable version will indeed still require the ROMs. This is a FAQ
that I really should address somewhere public, but here's a quick summary:
- IANAL, so don't take this as legal advice, but it *may* be that you
can legally copy the ROMs in the US due to the Berne convention not
being implemented there at the time of release, Roland apparently not
registering for copyright, and Roland being unable to find documentation
to support another avenue for a copyright claim in the US. Personally,
I'm not in the US.
- The "control" ROM contains tables that I'm quite sure are not
copyrightable, but we're nevertheless using directly for now. It also
contains default timbre parameters which may be copyrightable, so we're
not risking embedding those in the emulator.
- The "PCM" ROM contains a collection of fairly short sound samples.
Whether these fall under copyright at all isn't 100% certain, but
assuming they are the only solution is for people to record sounds that
are as similar as possible themselves. Such an endeavour would be
complicated by the inability to actually pass around the sounds they'd
need to reproduce - they'd have to already own a device themselves.

I will do so - thanks for pointing them out.
